The best part about cooking a turkey

For me is the soup from leftovers!! That is tonight's dinner! Just getting ready to put the biscuits in the oven and dinner will soon be ready. There is just something about cooking down the carcass for the broth and last of the meat and throwing in some pasta or rice and whatever veggies you have on hand that is wonderfully frugal and simple. I just love it when nothing goes to waste! So what is the best part of cooking a turkey to you?

Nightly Devotions

We have started a wonderful new thing in our home. Beloved is now leading us in daily devotions in the evening. It only takes a little bit of time, but it gives us a chance to study the scripture together. It is awesomely wonderful to have that little bit of family time with God. Afterward each evening, Erica haws been working on her Bible Study worksheets she seems to really be enjoying them and next time I get to the Christian bookstore, I will buy her some more so she doesn't run out.

Beloved and I may go hide in our room later and dig out the Christmas gifts. That is always fun. The kids will each get three gifts and a stocking. Stockings here are filled with things we need such as socks and underwear maybe one fun thing and a tiny bit of candy. This year the candy is different flavors of candy corn bought after Halloween at 90% off. They know the drill, it saves money and that is important and they get so little candy from us that any candy is special. Erica is getting a scarf I crocheted for her in her stocking this year as well. I hope she hasn't found my blog yet lol. The three gifts are our way of cutting down the excess they used to get from us and trying to turn Christmas more about Christ. Yes we love to give (sometimes to much) but really, enough is enough. And I am doing many handmade gifts this year. Zach is getting a lot of clothes (I found him lots of his favorite brand jeans at the thrift store) and he is getting some shoes and one other gift I won't mention here (don't want to spoil the punch if he reads this blog).

Thanksgiving being over, I am still feeling very thankful for all the wonderful things God as blessed me with. And I am ready as Christmas approaches to share those blessings with others.

So many reasons to be thankful

Yes it is that time again and we all really do need to count our blessings. I am so thankful for so many things in my life, and most importantly my Beloved husband. I can only hope he knows how much we love him and yet I don't think he can ever really know that. I look at people I know who have never known the kind of love I feel for him. I have a friend from church right now who has never seen that kind of love. So for that dear friends I pray for her, and I stand very thankful for the wonderful husband I have! What are you most thankful for this year?

I feel like I wasted the day

At church this morning, I was so tired and I decided I was not going to the evening service. It was different than our normal Sunday evening Bible study, because it was a community Thanksgiving Service at the school. But I was so tired. So I came home tied up some loose ends and slept the day away until 6 PM. Can you even imagine? Thankfully I had chicken ready from some I cooked the other night and had made noodles last night for chicken and noodles so dinner went together quickly enough. I do feel better, but I didn't get much done today!

I am thinking that tomorrow night will be ham and beans, but I am still thinking it over. I have to decide soon though! I am very thankful that we get a choice!

Yesterday we helped with the church food pantry outreach again. It is always enjoyable to be able to help others and serve God. I enjoy it so much. Next month we won't be having it because we are helping with community boxes that will be delivered to those in need. Those a a joint effort. We did take names of the children to try to help with gifts. I was lucky enough to find some great deals on some games to be able to donate for that. Times are tough for us right now also, because of Beloved being out of work. But there are so many so much worth off and it helps keep the sprits up when you are helping others.

Beloved has another phone interview

Beloved has another phone interview today. This one is in Texas. I really hope something breaks soon, it has been six months and while I love having him at home, it is really wearing on us. I want him to find the "right" job not just any job, but an offer of any kind would be awesome right now.

I am going to town later for a bit, maybe that will get our mind on other things! I have a few last minute things to purchase for our Thanksgiving meal, and I am not waiting any longer till the stores are crazy! Luckily I don't need much as most of it is in the stockpile. We have so much to be thankful for this year, as even though Beloved is without a job right now, we have plenty to eat!

Stuck in a rut

As far as the dinner menu around here, I am stuck in a rut. I have asked the kids for things they would like me to make, and they just haven't come up with anything. I so don't want to be cooking the same thing over and over and over again. But I simply run out of ideas sometimes. I know that happens to all of us wives, but that doesn't make it any easier lol.

The company Christmas party I go to every year is in two weeks! Hard to believe time has flown by so fast since last year! It is an exciting trip every year, and so much fun. I will have to work an hour or two from the party this year, but that was better than any of us having to stay home to work. The food and fun always flows and it is always a great time!

The holidays are fast approaching

Are you ready? I am so not! I have to finish crocheting Erica's scarf I started and find something for Beloved. He is the hardest person to do for! I wish I had some better ideas for him but sadly I just don't! He did give me a couple of ideas, and I will probably get those things, but he knows that and I would like to be able to do a nice surprise of something he didn't ask for. So what are all you fine ladies doing for your beloved?

A blessing this weekend

A true blessing happened for me this weekend. All the buzz the last few days on the message board I read HERE, was about the big ToysRUS sale and the rebate that goes with. It was a two day sale. So yesterday when I was in town, I decided to stop. With Beloved being unemployed, we just don't have much this year, but I still wanted to be able to donate. So I ended up spending about $32.00. But out of that, I am getting $11 back in a rebate and got a gift card to spend for $10 to put towards my daughters Christmas. So I was really out of pocket only around $12 on donations. Since I had planned to spend between $10-15 it worked out great! I was able to donate six games for our church outreach to give to children in need this year! It feels so good to give. Erica bought her game today to donate, because I am a huge believer in giving. She is earning some Christmas money by doing some of the chores I just seem to never get around to doing. We don't expect her to spend much, in fact I give her coupons when I can to help her out. We just want her to learn to give instead of thinking so much about receiving.

It was a nice day, so we went to the park today and fed the ducks and geese all of the old stale crackers and bread we had laying around. This time of year, they don't get fed nearly so much so they eat very well. And it is nice to be able to share with them also! We are going to try to do it more this winter.

For those who don't know it, right now coinstar is offering a great coin counting deal. If you use coinstar, and you get an Amazon (I think a few others qualify) gift card or ecard there is a rebate you can send in for a free $10 gift card. I took all of our change (including Erica's penny bank) and cashed them in on this deal. I then took the cash out of the Christmas fund and paid everyone back in cash. Cash for coins I guess we would call it! But it was a sweet deal to turn $40 into $50. If you have change laying around you may want to look into this! We are pretty much done Christmas shopping, as we start very early (Christmas night lol) and I save back a little money all year. Many gifts are thrift store or auction finds also. Beloved and I just need to get each other a thing or two, but our big gift to share between each other (because that is something we always do) is an Ipod touch to use when we travel and such. Of course, bought used at a great price. The kids now get three gifts each because that is how many Jesus got and a stocking. I think that will work great for us this year, and it is the first year for it.

A great article

There is an awesome article on the Preparedness Matters site. I know that many of my readers already do these things. For those who don't, you may want to try a few of the ideas. For those of us who already do, well just more encouragement that we are not alone!

Home devotional aids

We are in the process of looking at home devotional aids for family devotional time. Do you have a favorite? We are looking online and in book stores and such. I would love to hear of the favorites that everyone else has! Our Daily Bread right now seems to be the one I hear of most folks using. That one seems fine, but who says I have to use only one source? Throw em at me folks!

My daughter made a decision tonight

And was baptized. I can only hope that we do well in teaching her the ways of the Lord. I am proud of her choice, and the people of the church (although there are far less at Sunday night study) welcomed her with open arms. And, she was served her first communion afterwards.

Why is "submissive" a dirty word?

I really don't understand why "submissive" is a dirty word. As in "I am submissive to my husband". Even in my church, I find men sidestepping around quoting any of these scriptures, yet they are there. Ephesians 5:4 says “Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.” So yes, God is calling us to be submissive. Now that does not mean that we should be battered, berated or otherwise abused or mistreated by our men, as the book of Ephesians also says "A husband is to love his wife as God loves the church". This does not mean that we as women are to be treated less or badly, just that we should respect that our husbands are the head of our household, and I also believe that sometimes as a wife, it is ok for us to sometimes be the neck that turns the head. From my study of the bible, being submissive is not at all a bad thing, but a very wonderful thing.

After placing a couple of orders

To emergency essentials for the stockpile, I decided to try their Food Storage Analyzer. I think it could be quite helpful, but I have not ordered all the things I really want to yet. I can tell you we really like their refried beans! Part of me is trying to use up the stockpile since we may be moving soon, but when we get settled in a new place this will be a great help! It is free, go ahead and try it out!

I am hoping for less trips to the doctor now

We had to go to the doctor yet again today for Erica and her asthma. We did get a nebulizer now to bring home. Hopefully that will cut down on the office visits since now I can do the breathing treatments at home and if that doesn't solve the issue I can then take her in. The machine isn't cheap, but the insurance should pay for it, and then if it means less visits it should cost them less after two uses. The doctor also gave me the ok to start her on some of my herbal treatments I am using for my sinus and allergy problems. I have been doing better with them. I still have some symptoms, but not nearly as severe and I have been over a month now without a sinus infection! I am taking stinging nettle, ACV pills, fish oil and a multi vitamin. I am going to try her on the nettle and ACV. If it helps wonderful, if not I will discontinue it.

Beloved is still looking for work, I sure get weary sometimes on the whole deal. I keep praying that God will soon lead us the way. I have to trust his hand is on all of this, and I know it is. Sometimes though, it is just tough to keep your chin up! I have a friend going through some of the same things, and it sure is a help to not be alone!

I am still crocheting dish cloths. I have plenty now to give out for Christmas and may start some new projects of some kind soon. I would love to have enough to pass out to the women at the church food outreach for a small Christmas gift, but I likely won't have enough to do that with. It may be a goal for next year though. Giving always makes your own problems seem much easier to deal with.

Harvest festival and canning pumpkin

We had our harvest festival at church tonight. We had a dinner and them some music and then the kids went outside for a bonfire of sorts (in the village we can't have a real one, so they had an outdoor fireplace) and hay rack ride. They had a devotion and singing out there and got candy at the end. The adults had a song festival that is always nice, because there is a lot of musical talent in our church. I came home and am getting some pumpkin ready to can. I have never done it before and it seems to be a dicey undertaking. Anyone with experience in canning pumpkin have any advice to offer? I have two more to do and won't get them all done tonight. Perhaps I should have looked it up before I bought them. I have learned a lot about canning in the last two years, but it appears I still have lots to learn!
