Steak on a budget

We do not have steak often, it is simply to expensive. But once in awhile, I splurge and buy them off of the manager markdown rack. That way I am still getting them for less than full price. So tonight, we are having steak! Now as lucky or unlucky as we are, Erica is very picky about meat. She does not like steak at all. So I pick up Boca burgers and Boca brats for her when I get them on manager markdown with coupons, and always have some in the freezer. At that price, it is far cheaper than steak. Normally I have a eat what is served only rule. But with the price of steak, I figure why force her. To help the budget some, I always make homemade dinner rolls with a steak meal. And we don't always have salad. Any veggie works. Salad is expensive this time of year. I do sometimes get bagged salad marked down, and will buy it when I do. But the real savings comes from eating what is in season and also frozen veggies on sale with coupon are a great value this time of year. We will have baked potatoes tonight, because potatoes are a cheap and nutritious food that I always have on hand. So there you go, that is how we have steak on the cheap!

On the bread discussion, I have ordered and am using for the first time today Dough Enhancer. I have never used it before, but if it really helps my bread keep a few days longer, then it will be worth the money I really think. If you have used it, I would love to hear your experiences with it!

A much needed day of rest

Tomorrow and I am so glad. I have been running and running all week. Have had to go to town every day. Just driving to town takes enough time, but I have had so many medical appointments this week that it has been super busy. I am so thrilled that there is nothing really going on tomorrow! I am going to get some rest and try to get some things done around the house. I have a dental appointment next week, and I have to make an appointment with a dermatologist to have a mole removed that my doctor does not like the looks of, and I hope things really slow down. My home really pays the price when I am so busy with other things.

On the motherhood front, my daughter has been having some completely unacceptable behavior the last couple of days, and the discipline turned into a real tantrum tonight. If you have never seen an 11 year old throw a tantrum, you are pretty lucky! I hope that tonight was the end of this, because mommy is on her last nerve with this.

Sharing Christ's love and herbal remedies

Tomorrow is the monthly food outreach at our church. This is something I really enjoy helping with. It feels so good to go help fill a need for people and pass around God's love. It has become a family affair for us, and something I very much look forward to. I am usually in the back room helping fill bags. DD goes with the person who goes and buys the milk and then she and Beloved help carry groceries for people. Beloved usually goes and gets my papers and runs my Saturday morning errands during the part where the people who come are getting a devotional and we are in the back preparing the bags. It is so nice that he can help do some of my running. Especially in this cold, I really don't like cold at all, so I don't mind letting him do the cold work for me!

I have added some more herbs to my herbal line each day. I have added Dong Quai (for women's issues), and passion flower for help with anxiety and sleeping. I hope to soon report that they are working great as a part of my lineup. Some days it feels like I take a ton of herbs, but they do seem to be helping in some ways. I am thinking that the Passion Flower may also help my fibro as it is a pain reliever. Time will tell!

So much snow and more on the way

Here in southern Ohio, we have yet more snow on the way. We have had so much the last couple of weeks and the kids have missed so much school. Normally I like snow, but this is just enough already! I am so tired of the stuff now. And to think what a muddy mucky mess it will be when it melts, we may never have a yard again lol. But the good news is that I hear that all the drought areas are out of it now! I guess it is feast or famine lol. I finally got my delivery from Emergency Essentials that I ordered it has been sitting on a Fed Ex truck for a week so they could deliver due to the weather. So happy to finally have it, now we can have pizza tomorrow night!

I need you to share with me

I am hoping to make up a packet of simple frugal homemade recipes to share with the people who use our church food pantry. So many younger women just don't know how to cook these days and buy everything pre processed and pre packaged for them. I am going to put together things such as pancake mix (in a large batch), cream soup mix, laundry soap and such. If you have anything to add that you thing would help someone please leave it in a comment! Thanks so much for all your help!

Food storage give aways

Prepardness Pantry (Emergency Essentials) has several gift card give aways right now. I really like their products and if you are making a somewhat big order, the shipping is not bad at all. The only problem at all I have with them is I would like to order a couple of their pails and never have enough weight for them to ship them. But that likely isn't really their fault it is more likely about cost. Anyway, if you could snag one of these free gift cards, it would basically pay for the shipping! I have another order almost here from them, but it is sitting with Fed-Ex on a weather delay lol. All this darn snow is slowing everything up. Don't get me wrong, I love snow but this year I have had enough already and I am ready for spring.

Asking for prayers

Beloved is in Nebraska today for a job interview. It sounds like a great match for him. We could use some prayers that this is the one and his unemployment will be over. It has been such a long road and we are weary. Of course it is all in God's hands, and he will send us where we are supposed to be in the end. Sometimes trusting in God can be so hard, but of course in the end it is all we can do.

Dehydrated foods

I have been using a lot of these lately as I dried some things from the garden last summer. I have come to really enjoy cooking with them. My favorite thing to use dehydrated veggies for now? Pizza. So easy to rehydrate things like mushrooms and bell peppers in water to use and so much cheaper than paying winter time prices. In fact, I am out of most of my stuff now and have ordered some more to get me by until summer when I can have my garden going! The other benefit, the dehydrated stuff takes less storage space and no freezing or refrigeration! I do still can some of my stuff and it has its place, but so does the dehydrator. Now, I will not suggest anyone run out and buy a dehydrator, it seems I see them often in the thrift store! So if you want one and don't have one, start watching there. No need in paying full price when you can get it for a fraction of the cost!

The snowstorm is here. They are expecting we will get about 8 or 9 inches. Honestly I wouldn't mind more. It is a weekend and the only place I would even possibly have to go is church Sunday, and that is only about a mile a way. And our village does a pretty good job on the streets so I don't see that being a problem. Beloved does however have to travel next week for a job interview in Nebraska, so it will be nice if all the flights are caught back up by then so he doesn't risk delays and such.

I am really praying on this job. It is the first one that really feels like a good fit for us. And it has been a dry spell for interviews. I don't know why this one feels like the one, but I really hope I am right. Keep us in your prayers! The fact he is going for the in person interview says a lot, it means he got past the first phone interview and they are still intrested!

I have been gone to long!

I was very ill with a very severe sinus infection and spent three days in bed. I still have it, but am much better than I was! I am so happy to be blogging again.

Yesterday we were blessed with some pears. I ended up with enough to can 11 quarts! Since I am still somewhat ill, my wonderful beloved helped me out quite a bit with them, and I am very thankful for his help as well as the pears. Beloved loves pears, but they can be so pricey that these are a real treat. I rarely take anything off of freecycle, but I couldn't pass these up!

Tonight for dinner I am taking it easy since I still don't feel quite well. We are having pot pies (from the store). It sounded good to Beloved. A little more than I really wanted to pay for them, but I guess once in awhile we can splurge.
