Our antenna is arriving today!

Our TV antenna is arriving today. Perhaps I am nuts, but I can't wait to get it put up and tested out. I am dying to cut out our cable bill. Of course I will be keeping internet, because it allows me to have my awesome part-time job from home. But cutting the bills any, is always welcome. This is after all a blog about being frugal! Not to mention that with Beloved still unable to find a job, we need to cut as much as we can. I am looking forward to posting an update soon telling you all that we are cable free!

In the kitchen, I have started some sourdough starter. I have done this before and was not really thrilled with it. And that one started with yeast, and I really wanted natural yeast. I am hoping this will work. I have also started an Amish Friendship Bread starter. Also hoping that it will work out! If you have any suggestions for me, let me know! I am afraid that without adding any yeast to start it, I will mess it up. I am so hoping not though.

Spiritually I am thinking of trying something new this spring. I am thinking of a weekend retreat! I have never been to one, so I am hoping it will be a good thing. Of course I have not left my family like this before, so I am a little antsy about that. Of course Beloved can handle things, but I feel a little guilty about leaving. But I guess maybe I shouldn't. Have any of you ever done this? I would love to hear your stories!

Getting rid of cable

We have had some form of cable TV or satellite for as long as Beloved and I have been married. He has had it longer than that. He loves his sports. Can't seem to live without them. But after a year of discussions, and money issues we have decided to go without cable. We are going into summer of course, so that means we will be outside a lot more. We are going to be using Netflix streaming. We have an antenna on order so we can get our local news and such still. I am hoping this will be a success. Not only does Cable cost a ton when you add it up. But it brings some things into my home that I don't welcome. A big deal when you have young minds watching. I will let you all know how it goes as things go on!

A nice Valentines dinner

So budget being tight as it is, we had to get creative. So, Beloved and I hung tarps yesterday on the back patio got out the propane heater, and we grilled steaks, corn and baked potatoes outside. It was lovely. Tonight was the annual hearts banquet at church. The food was good, and the "show" was wonderfully funny. They did Forest Gump shares Jesus. We have a guy that does a great Forest Gump. So they did him sitting on his bus bench talking to the others who happened along about Jesus. Complete with commercials that they video taped that really made the show! Most of the commercials were remakes of Geico commercials. They were made into "can reading your Bible 15 minutes a day really change your life". I have never seen any real commercial so funny! $5 a person donation (to cover cost of food of course) was a real steal. We had pork loin, green beans, cheesy hash browns and dinner rolls. And for dessert cake or cheesecake. It was a very nice evening.

I got Erica signed up for camp today. She is going twice this year! She had such a great time last year that we really wanted to give her an extra week this year. One is a birthday gift. She is going to one where she sleeps outdoors in tree houses! The other one she will be in the cabins with AC and bathrooms and showers! Should be a great mix for her. She is going once in June and once in July. They put a ton of activities in the week and a ton of learning about God. I don't think we are telling her about the second week until she is on the way there! Not sure on that though.

The one thing I want to get beloved

I want to get beloved a canning jar mug for Valentines day. But all I can find are 16 oz ones. That is not at all big enough for him! He would be refilling it every ten minutes! Does anyone have any suggestions where I could find maybe a quart sized one? He would love it.

Other than that, I am cooking a nice steak dinner for us for that evening. Not sure what the kids will be eating or whatever. But DH and I are going to have a nice dinner together. I may have the kids fend for themselves that night. I wish though it was warmer so we could go to the park and grill them and be alone for a bit. That would be totally more of a date night!

What do you and your beloved do for Valentines day? We don't spend a fortune on it, but we love to take a little time on that evening to celebrate each other.

BRRR Been a very cold day and emergency preparedness

Well this winter storm has visited and left us. Now it is just very cold. Seems like we have had several storms this year, but no really big ones in our area. The major point of the ice from this one missed us by about 30 miles or so. I was somewhat disappointed, because we are very prepared. Far more than most people anyway. We don't have a generator, but we have propane and gas grills and a propane smoker and camp stoves. We also have a kerosene heater and of course plenty of food storage. Not to mention the battery powered radio and the wind up one and the oil lamps and kerosene lamps. Watching the news and the run on generators always amazes me. Why doesn't anyone ever prepare themselves? It is not so uncommon for things to happen. The only thing we don't have a good storage of is water, but I have a barrel for that one the way. It really was a matter of saving up the money and not having water storage has really eaten at me. I am not sure why, but it felt like an emergency to get it taken care of. I will have 55 gallons anyway. Not a lot for a family of four, but if things get bad, we will have to conserve. Something is better than nothing. I do need a bigger storage for my emergency kit. It is overflowing. I currently use a five gallon bucket with lid. It is just first aid stuff and toilet paper and such. But I need something bigger. Any ideas?
